Reduced Prices on Age-Defying Serum and Age-Defying Under Eye Gel

Posted: April 2nd, 2010By: Treasured Locks
treasuredlocks_2100_39506867

We are happy to announce that we have been able to drastically reduce prices on two of our best anti-aging face care products.  Effectively immediately both the HumiNature Age-Defying Serum and HumiNature Age-Defying Under Eye Gel are more affordable than ever.

Our HumiNature Age-Defying Serum has been formulated to be an all in one product for you. It can be applied in the morning as a step just prior to applying makeup. It can be used at night alone or just prior to using a moisturizer. It’s hard to believe you’re also rejuvenating your skin, sloughing off old cells and encouraging the natural renewal process…Hard to believe, that is, until you look in the mirror and see a smoother, more radiant complexion. A moisturizing skin serum enriched with vitamins and minerals, natural oils and botanicals to wipe out roughness, counter irritation and infuse skin with vitamins. Improves skin density and firmness: diminishing fine lines and imperfections, while supporting skin’s own collagen-building function.

Age-Defying Under Eye Gel with DMAE is an almost magical treatment for the thin skin in your eye area. Apply around eyes after cleansing and toning for best results. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on your body. Because of its thinness and the “laugh lines” that form, this area is very prone to wrinkling otherwise known as “crow’s feet”. DMAE, Blue Green Algae, Seaweed and our other premium organic ingredients smooth out those wrinkles, reduce sagging and tone the skin making it appear firmer. Our eye cream contains moisturizers that are specially formulated for this very sensitive area.

A Desperate Mother’s Request: Saving Lives

Posted: January 25th, 2010By: Treasured Locks
Jennifer Jones Austin

Jennifer Jones Austin

Written by Jennifer Jones Austin

Hello, my name is Jennifer Jones Austin.  I am a 41 year old mother of two young children.  Only months ago on September 23, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  Just days before I was walking around feeling fine, taking care of my family, going to the gym daily, and working professionally as an advocate for children and families living in poverty.  I had no medical history of health problems.  Things were good.

Today I live with the very real possibility that I may not see my children grow up.  My doctors have informed me that my chances of surviving Acute Myeloid Leukemia are small unless I undergo a bone marrow transplant that would cure me of this cancer.  And now my family, friends, colleagues and I are feverishly searching for a bone marrow donor who will help me have a transplant and significantly decrease the odds of the cancer returning.  As we search, we also are hoping to help others like me who need transplants too.

Due to dna, there is a greater likelihood that a fellow African American would be the most compatible donor for me.  Unfortunately, however, African Americans are grossly underrepresented in the national and international bone marrow donor registries.  For this reason, we are holding drives across the country and online to both raise awareness about the need for African Americans to volunteer to help save another’s life by being bone marrow registrants, and to actually increase the representation of African Americans in the registries.

There are thousands of African Americans who suffer with Leukemia who can be helped by fellow African Americans.  If we come together as a community and support our fellow African Americans — some we know and some we don’t know — by just stepping forward, joining the “Be The Match Registry”, and being tested to determine whether we can help another by donating marrow through a medical procedure similar to a blood donation, together we can save thousands of lives.  Together we can hold each other up.

What I am asking my African American brothers and sisters to do is to engage and be a part of this very important effort — not just for me, but for other African Americans.  One never knows what his or her destiny will be or what will happen in his or her life.  Today it’s me, this African American woman, but tomorrow it could be some other African American’s brother, sister, daughter, son, mother or the person him or herself whose in need of a bone marrow transplant.  What we do today can affect the lives of so many people today, tomorrow and in the years to come.  If we just get involved and register, get tested and make ourselves available to someone else in great need of a bone marrow transplant, we as African Americans can save the lives of many other African Americans.

Here are four important facts I want you to know:

  1. The only thing required to determine if you are a match for me or others is the simple swabbing of your cheek.
  2. Due to advances in medicine, donating bone marrow is as simple as giving blood.  The majority of the time there is no need for a surgical procedure to extract bone marrow.
  3. Potential donors can either attend a drive or click the link below to go online and have a kit sent to them, swab their own cheek and send it in for processing.  (Everything is completely free)
  4. Finally and most importantly – Prayer Changes Things!  Please keep my family and I as well as others in your prayers. Thanks in advance for your prayers, support and efforts to save my life as well as others.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Jones Austin

Jennifer Jones Austin, Activist, Needs Bone Marrow Donor

Posted: December 21st, 2009By: Treasured Locks
Jennifer Jones Austin

Jennifer Jones Austin

Written by Frederick Alexander Meade

All was well for Jennifer Jones Austin and her family in the recent months leading into the holiday season.

Jen — as she is often referred to by those close to her — the 41 year old wife of Shawn Austin and mother to a daughter 12 and son eight, has garnered great contentment in numerous areas of her life.

The daughter of a prominent minister, the late Dr. William Augustus Jones, not only developed a fulfilling family life but a satisfying and purposeful professional existence as well.

As an attorney for nearly 20 years, Jennifer Jones Austin has advocated for disenfranchised children and families within New York State and abroad. The native New Yorker, Jones Austin has served the needs of the less fortunate in a multitude of capacities both within the public and private sector.

Jones Austin served as New York City ’s first Family Services Coordinator, a position to which she was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg after serving four years as a Deputy Commissioner in the City’s Administration for Children’s Services.

As Family Services Coordinator, Jones Austin was responsible for leading multiple interagency initiatives for children and families of the city. Jennifer’s services would further be called upon as she played a key role in helping to coordinate and advance the Mayor’s anti-poverty initiatives.

Jones Austin also held the position of Civil Rights Deputy Bureau Chief for Policy, Legislation and Public Outreach for then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Within the realm of advocacy for the education rights of children, Jones Austin served as the Vice President of Development for LearnNow/Edison Schools Inc.

In 2008 the accomplished attorney accepted a position with the United Way of New York City as the Senior Vice President of Community Investment, thus further establishing her record as an inspired and committed leader in the service of those in the greatest need of support.

In recent weeks however, Jen’s life has undergone considerable upheaval.

A fever requiring the hospitalization of the active mother would serve as a precursor to an ultimate diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Such a medical diagnosis requires that Jones Austin receive a bone marrow transplant in the immediate future if her life is to be extended.

Individuals in need of a bone marrow transplant essentially require a donor of the same ethnicity, as a transplant may only occur between parties in possession of matching genetic tissue. This reality however functions to present a challenge for most individuals of African descent, as this group is dramatically underrepresented within national and international bone marrow registries.

In the face of this reality, Jennifer and others of African ancestry must often rely on the will of the immediate public if they are to identify a life saving match.

Scheduled bone marrow drives have emerged throughout the country in an effort to not only save the life of this community activist but also those who require the same medical procedure as well.

Due to considerable advances in medicine, the process by which one is determined a match for a needy recipient is as simple as placing a swab along the inside of the potential donor’s cheek. Additionally, if an individual is identified as a match for a patient, a bone marrow transplant generally only requires the donor give blood.

Jennifer Jones Austin has dedicated her life to protecting the natural rights of those whom society has very often marginalized and seemingly cast aside. A stalwart agent in working to procure greater measures of social and economic justice for the least of these within our society, Jennifer now requires the public she has served for almost two decades to assist in helping her to survive.

When recently interviewed on a NBC New York Local News broadcast and asked of her hopes with respect to her unsettling circumstance, Jen true to form, simply stated she felt encouraged that not only would she find a match, but through the public’s efforts in assisting in this endeavor, many others in need of a similar transplant would also receive help.

As has always been the case, Jen’s thoughts remain on the people.

Good Hair- we saw it.

Posted: October 30th, 2009By: Treasured Locks
Halle Berry 2004 in Hamburg Germany

Image via Wikipedia

Ty and I went to see Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” a couple of days ago. Good Hair is a movie that’s difficult to categorize. Is is a comedy? Is it a documentary? Is it a social commentary? After watching it I’m not really sure. But, one of the things I love about the movie is it is one that will get people talking. Some have accused Chris of airing black people’s secrets about the obsession with our hair in front of white people. Some have accused him of exploiting black women by making this movie. But, we see it as an opportunity to educate ourselves and the white community about the incredibly (and unnecessarily complicated) subject of black hair.
Given that Chris is not known as a documentary maker (and how many  people really want to see a documentary anyway?), I think the combination of comedy and documentary was a good idea. The movie, for the most part, keeps you entertained (although I found myself asking why some of the scenes were in there). There are many sexual references and one hair dresser in particular who talks a blue streak, unfortunately making the movie not suitable for children.  A shame because we would have loved to have taken our girls.  We were warned not to take our 12 and 9 year olds and I’m really glad we didn’t.
The movie touched on a couple of  really good points.  The first is the obsession in the black community (and with white people) about “good” hair or straight hair.   The term “good hair’ basically means hair that is smooth and straight.  The closer to European, the better.   Chris talked about the damage that can be done by chemical relaxers.  But, this part of the movie was greatly exaggerated as Chris spoke with a white chemist who was shocked that women put sodium hydroxide on their hair.  Well, as a Chemical Engineer, it’s not pure sodium hydroxide and you don’t leave it on your hair for several hours as they did in the demonstration in the movie.   Tywana got the message that the movie was promoting natural hair.  I really didn’t see it that way.  One message we both agreed on though is that you should not be putting perms in the hair of toddlers.  Another message that  came through is black people literally spend billions of dollars a year trying to make their hair into something it often simply cannot be.  People call us all the time asking how they can get their hair to look like Halle Berry’s or Michael Jackson’s or some other star who was either born with a completely different hair type or is paying several thousand dollars a year in achieving that style.  As Maya Angelou said “Good hair is hair that is on your head.”.  We all have to accept what we’ve got to work with.
Another great point made by the movie is the magnitude of the black hair care market.  Our women (and men) spend a huge amount of money on hair care products and most of that money goes to white companies who sell through Asian distributors.  We first started talking about this back in 2006 in this blog post The State of the Black Hair Care Industry Al Sharpton put it graphically when he said we are the only people who wear our economic oppression on our heads. Most beauty supply stores are owned by Koreans and other Asians who have put a stranglehold on the market.  This was also documented in a film by (ironically a white guy) Aron Ranen. The film can be purchased on DVD here Black Hair DVD or viewed on YouTube here.   Being in the black hair care market, Treasured Locks has purposely avoided dealing with distributors.  Frankly, most of the products distributed through those channels are just awful.  And secondly, the distributors have on many occasions flat out lied to us about product availability as soon as they have found out we are a black owned retailer.  Chris talked to women in a beauty shop who were spending $1,000 a piece on a “weave” (basically a wig sewn to the head).
After watching Chris on Oprah and seeing the clips of the movie on YouTube and other places we felt most of the really funny parts we had seen already.  And, having been in the industry for a while now we weren’t as shocked as shocked by the economic realities as a lot of people would have been. We definitely recommend “Good Hair”.  But, if you see it and like it, definitely check out Aron Ranen’s documentary also.

Good Hair

Posted: October 2nd, 2009By: Treasured Locks

Did you catch Chris Rock on Oprah on 09/30 (Wednesday this week)? He was promoting his new movie “Good Hair” which should prompt a lot of good discussion among not only black people but the larger community about what good hair means. It was a great show about the often painful things black women have to go through to care for their hair. But, some points about white women’s obsession with their hair were also interesting as one of Oprah’s correspondents talked about how much she hates her natural hair color and Chris and Oprah talked about how almost all white women color their hair. Solange Knowles (Beyonce’s sister) was on. She recently cut all of her hair off tired of being a slave to it spending (she reported) $40-50,000/year on her hair and half of her life maintaining it.

You know we support women whether they choose to perm their hair or wear it natural. But, Chris made a really good point regarding “kiddie perms”. We agree that you should avoid putting perms in children’s hair at least until they are teenagers and can decide for themselves. It’s not only about the physical damage that can be done, but the emotional message sent telling them that the only good hair is straight hair.

If you didn’t catch the show, there are some highlights here: http://www.oprah.com/dated/oprahshow/oprahshow-20090916-chris-rock-hair

Treasured Locks- Knot No More

Posted: August 6th, 2009By: Treasured Locks
knot-no-more

Treasured Locks Knot No MoreTM is a product that we developed based on numerous requests from our clients.  Knot No MoreTM is leave-in detangling conditioner especially formulated to facilitate the removal of hair styles such as locks, twists, cornrows and braids.   Our product is specially made to soften and “slicken” the hair making it possible to remove knots and tangles that would otherwise cause pain and breakage.  Tight braids can be extremely difficult to remove.  Dreadlock removal has been thought impossible by some.  Treasured Locks Knot No More reduces the friction between your hair allowing you to pull a comb and/or your fingers through to remove these styles with minimal, hair loss, effort and pain.  It also improves the hair’s elasticity, minimizing breakage while pulling through the tangles.

Product benefits:

  • Removes styles once thought impossible to remove
  • Softens hair
  • Increases elasticity to prevent breakage
  • Provides slip so that hair can be pulled apart
  • Can be used for daily comb-outs

Removing dreadlocks is not impossible.  It takes some time and patience and goes better if you can find a friend to help.  Detailed instructions are available here:  How to Remove Locks & Braids.

Formula 103- New and Vastly Improved

Posted: August 4th, 2009By: Treasured Locks

In 2008, Halsik began working on yet another reformulation of Formula 103.  While Formula 103 was already the best depilatory on the market, they knew they could make it even better. The original formula leapfrogged the depilatories currently on the market, providing men who had used a depilatory in the past with a far superior alternative. The next goal for Halsik, one even more ambitious, was to develop a product for men who had never used a depilatory before. The goal- irritation free shaving. In 2009, the new Formula 103 is ready for distribution. The new Formula 103 is as much better than the previous version as the previous version was better than any other depilatory on the market.  Also, with the addition of the new formula there is a version just for the ladies- bikini area, underarms and legs.  Check it out now.

Natural-Laxer MIX Results

Many of you have been asking for pictures of before and after results from Natural-Laxer MIX.  We have been reluctant to give photos, not because the product doesn’t work but because it works differently for different people, depending on how well you follow the directions in applying it, how you style your hair and your hair type.

We have put together a short (3 minute) video that chronicles one woman’s experience with Natural-Laxer MIX over a two month period.  She applied it once a week for three weeks and then twice more two months later.  From the video, you can get a feel for what you might be able to expect with Natural-Laxer MIX and can see how it works gradually and cumulatively to make natural hair more manageable without making it completely straight and without harsh chemicals.

H2G Hair Growth Supplement- Minor Change

Posted: May 4th, 2009By: Treasured Locks

If you have purchased the Treasured Locks H2G Hair Growth Supplement in the past, you will notice a change in the appearance of the tablets.  The basic formula remains the same. But, to improve the durability of the tablet itself so that it withstands shipping, we have changed the coating to a vitamin B-2 coating.  This will give the tablet a yellow color instead of the white you are used to.

Nubian Heritage Policy Change

Posted: April 2nd, 2009By: Treasured Locks
shelves

We know how aggravating it is when you want to order something and it’s not in stock.  We apologize for the fact that we have been having a great deal of difficulty keeping SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage products in stock.

Unfortunately, the supply problems with SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage have no end in sight.  We will continue to do the best we can to keep supply.  However, the out of stock situations have gotten so frequent that we will no longer be updating the blog.  These items will be an “as available” item from now until the supply situation gets better.  When we are out and know it will be more than few days, we will remove the item from sale on the website. When we get it back in stock, we’ll put it back on the website.

This policy change is only for Nubian Heritage and SheaMoisture items.  Other items will be updated on the blog
as usual.

Thank you for your patience.

Posted: March 25th, 2009By: Treasured Locks

Black Opal Fade & Conceal is a dual product with a fade lotion on one end and a cream concealer on the other.   Designed to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone, dark spots and particularly under eye dark circles.  The lotion helps to gently and gradually fade dark spots or circles while the concealer camouflages them.

  • Asian plant extracts and antioxidants in the fade lotion help diminish the appearance of age spots and give the skin a lighter, more even-toned complexion.
  • Each side can be used on its own or together
  • Cream concealer offered in those famous Black Opal Shades

Treasured Locks My Rewards Program

Treasured Locks is thrilled to be able to offer our loyal clients a way of saying thank you for your continued business with us. Our unique rewards program allows you to earn a discount on Treasured Locks products in two ways.  This program has been in development for about a year and we are excited (and relieved) to finally take the wraps off of it.

Points Earned by Buying Product

The first way to earn points in the program is by simply by buying your favorite products. Each dollar you spend with Treasured Locks earns one point.  So just by doing what you are already doing, you can earn a discount.  Points will begin accumulating on March 16, 2009.

Points Earned by Product Testimonials (Coming Soon)

The second way to earn points in the program is by telling us what you think of your favorite products. For every submitted and approved testimonial, Treasured Locks will put an additional 20 points into your account. So, in addition to earning points for buying a product, if you take the time to share your experience, you can multiply those points. Testimonials must be for products you have actually purchased and used. We will reject any testimonials that we deem to be false (whether positive or negative). Our intent is to reward you for taking to write a truthful account of your experience with our products. Look for points for testimonials to begin by the third quarter of 2009.

The Value of Your Points
After you reach the minimal point level, you can redeem your points for a Treasured Locks coupon.  The coupon is good towards the purchase of any Treasured Locks product available on our website.  At the program’s inception you can buy a $5.00 coupon for 200 points, a $10.00 coupon for 300 points and a $25.00 coupon for 500 points.   See the details in the My Rewards section for current point values.

How to Cash In Your Points

Points are accumulated until you decide to cash them in for a Treasured Locks Coupon. You can cash them in early and often or you can let them build until they are worth more. Are you a spender or a saver? It’s up to you.

Participation and Details of the Program

  • Participation in the Treasured Locks My Rewards program is open to any customer of Treasured Locks who wishes to participate.
  • To participate you must create and maintain a My Account on Treasured Locks’ website.
  • Points may only be redeemed for Treasured Locks coupons and have no cash value.
  • The terms and conditions of the program are subject to change, without notice, at any time.

Free Shipping Level Increase

Posted: March 12th, 2009By: Treasured Locks

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, we have incurred multiple increases in many of our costs of doing business, including the cost of shipping products in, the costs of shipping products out, the costs of raw materials and increases in our costs from some of the manufacturers we represent.  We have figured out a way to hold the line on our shipping charges and to maintain the tiered pricing model we currently have.   We know money is tight for a lot of people right now.  This is not a good time to increase prices.  However, we will be raising the level to qualify for free ground shipping from $70.00 to $80.00.  Free Ground Shiping will still be available.  We will just ask you to place a slightly larger order to qualify.

Natural-Laxer Plus Discontinued

Posted: March 4th, 2009By: Treasured Locks

Effectively immediately, we will no longer sell Baka Beauty’s Natural-Laxer Plus.  Natural-Laxer is an herbal hair treatment that has been enjoyed by thousands of men and women over the past several years.   The product has continued to evolve and the current form is Natural-Laxer MIX.   Once Natural-Laxer MIX was created, it has always been the intention to discontinue selling Natural-Laxer Plus.  Natural-Laxer MIX contains the same ingredients.  But, the Sahara Clay is premeasured and mixed with the herbs. Also, the clay is micronized, so you don’t have to crush it.  If you liked Natural-Laxer Plus, you’ll love Natural-Laxer MIX.

My Natural Hair Update

Posted: January 27th, 2009By: Treasured Locks
ty-new-years2.jpg

Don’t you love being able to do your own natural hair?  One of the reasons I wanted to go natural was to be able to handle my own hair.  Although, it was a bit trying at first, I have a handle on my hair now.  I have a relatively small list of styles, but hey I am working on more.☺  I have discovered that the real key is having the right products.  I am amazed at how much it has grown, since I have cut out the chemicals and the heat.  The longer it gets the easier it is for me to work with.  I will still go to my stylist for trims and occasional hair style, but mainly my hair is mine to work with.  Stay tuned for my bag of tricks used in styling my natural hair.  For now happy styling.  I would love to hear from you on how working with your natural hair is going.  Drop me a line!

Peace,
Tywana
